My Story, In My Words
I wasn't born into a musical family, but ever since I was a little girl, I loved music and music loved me back. No matter what is going on in my life, I learned from young that I can always find my place of peace in a song. For as far back as I can remember, I have been singing. I sang loud and out loud all around the two bedroom apartment in the Bronx, NY where I was born and raised. I sang in the school chorus, talent shows, plays and even in the church choir. I was raised as a Pentecostal Christian so Gospel music was my first love, and it still is.
Today, as a believer beyond denominations, I sing all types of music. My sound reflects my gospel roots and travels with me through all genres of music. If I had to name it, I would say that my sound is a fusion of neo-soul, and jazz with a little R & B attitude at times. What is consistent with me is my lyrical content. I sing my hearts song and that is always expressed through a positive vibration.
As a teenager, I attended the High School for Performing Arts in New York City and majored in Drama. After school I would go to the Mind Builders Creative Arts Center where I was a member of an acting ensemble called, "The Positive Youth Troupe." Here I studied under the musical direction of Ankh Ra, now known as the vocal Guru on MTV's Making the Band 4. I toured with them playing the lead role in an off Broadway musical all over New York City and throughout the United States. Through this I gained real world experience, exposure and learned the discipline required to be an artist.
After high school I worked as a studio vocalist and was an aspiring R&B artist. I wrote and performed my original songs at popular NY night clubs when I opened up for notable R&B acts like Gerald Alston and Milirah. In 2004, I went on tour with the gospel play, “Mama I Want to Sing”, and sing I did! As a lover of musical theatre, I had to jump on the opportunity to work with gospel great Edwin Hawkins, Tony Terry, El Debarge and Robin S. in the stage play, “When a man Cries” which was produced and starring the King of Dramedy himself, J.D. Lawrence.
I have focused most of my career on music but I had a thing for videography ever since my junior high school days when I was in the Audio Visual Club. I knew then that film and television production was an art form that I would want to explore again.
In 2003, I re-ignited the flame and recruited my brother who is a professional videographer to partner with me to produce my own music video for the song, "Thank You" that I wrote and performed on the gospel compilation album, The Tehilla Project. I had a blast and I knew then that I truly loved being behind the camera, as much as I loved being in front of it. I then took some classes and received a certification in Field and Studio Production at Bronxnet, a public access television network. After which, I produced and directed a sketch comedy show called, “The Sala Show”, which aired on all of the public access channels within New York City.
Most recently, I have completed my first independent film. It is my personal documentary called, “Project Liberation- My Alopecia Experience.” I collaborated with some super talented music producers and simultaneously released a mini soundtrack with the same title with songs that I wrote and performed for the film. It consists of songs of empowerment, positive affirmation and praise.
Today, as an advocate for Alopecia Areata awareness, I lift my voice as an inspirational speaker and singer. My goal is to share my testimony and encourage women who may be dealing with low self esteem or a lack of confidence due to hair loss or for any reason.
As the founder and president of Dubose Entertainment, my goal is to create artistic works that will entertain, inform and inspire all people.
